A goregeous day yesterday brought lots of people out of their little homes and out from their rain gear. A taste of Vancouver summer had come. James and Sukhi recently had a new addition to their family. Coming over from England to visit family, they also arranged a quick portrait session with their daughter Anaiyah.

Although the sun was fierce, little Anaiyah didn’t care. This 5 month old had her first real touch of grass, and sand so she was SUPER preoccupied. Nonetheless, she cracked a couple of smiles and just soaked up the sun!

Just another rainy Sunday in Vancouver. As of late the weather gods have been all over the map with the weather. Early on Sunday we looked out the window and it was still sunny, so I thought sure thing… we’re on for the day’s engagement session with Michelle and Chris! Right around noon the storm rolled in. And by that time, it would be too late for Michelle to get out of her makeup and hair appointment… Oh wells, we’ll make the best of it. Good thing we decided to start off at a coffee shop.

So we made our way to 49th Parallel on Main St. Soon after, the sun gods decided to be nice and gave us a window of good weather and we made our way out to Queen Elizabeth Park!

We had an excellent time, laughing and joking around. Can’t wait for the wedding!

Every so often you meet a couple that is fun, easy going but very camera shy. This was that couple. We spent an afternoon with Jocelyn and Travis at UBC taking photographs. Knowing they were a on the shy side of things, I knew that making them feel at ease was going to be key to their session.

Sometimes, this means that as a photographer we start off differently, something less intimate and more at a distance. Coaching them through to make them look great but not put them off the whole posing thing.

What really helped that day was that with the company of their dogs, Jocelyn and Travis looked more at ease. We had a great time at some more secluded places around UBC and listening to Jocelyn and Travis’s concern I think really went a long way to getting some wonderful photos.

I feel refreshed as I sit back here in Vancouver reflecting on a 3 week long trip that was my honeymoon. You see, I haven’t been off the continent since I was 6 years old. Travelling within North America has been pretty much all I’ve known. In addition, I haven’t left the studio for over 1.5 weeks since it’s beginning of 2002.

So where did I go? What did I experience? What did I learn?

There was so much to do and see. It was really eye opening to experience other cultures, view their versions of wedding photography as well as understand my own culture a bit better.

Our trip started in Singapore, where food and relaxation was the theme of this destination. I got to reconnect with friends that have made Singapore their home as well as meet up with a fellow photographer that happened to be in Singapore at the same time!

Here are a few photographs to start. I’ll start a post just about Singapore as the weeks go on!

Ultimately, I’d love to shoot a few weddings in Asia in a year. If you are a bride or groom in Asia or planning to go to Asia for your wedding, consider chatting with us! We’d love to tell your story!

Food was so abundant there and it makes me want to start a separate blog just on the food and things we saw.

The highlight of my trip however was really connecting with friends

Well, I’ve been engaged for quite some time now and I’ve had people ask all the time on who is going to take our photographs. My answer was simple, my own crew. The best part about this process is that I get to have the guys who have been with me for years and have shared so many experiences with me, capture our love story.

Michael Lee & Michael Fox were the guys behind the lens for our engagement and although I can’t show you now… Steve, Jordan, Jeff Ho are busy concocting the videography for our event.

Of course all the fun and stuff can’t be done without the help of some great friends. Special thanks to the people who have been helping hands through the shoots: Simon, Samson, Allen and Mandy, thanks for suffering through the cold with us!

It was a cold day today and the weather gods weren’t very pleasant. We decided that it would be best to photograph our little shy model Avia at the studio.

What a beautiful little girl Avia is. Her eyes are so pretty and her smile, although infrequent today, was very precious.

Here is a quick preview.

After moving into our studio in late February, we finally got to put our new signage up front for our photography studio. In Vancouver, there are fewer and fewer brick and mortar businesses in our industry favoring more and more at home studios. However, I still think that having a brick and mortar studio space really helps keep your personal life and professional life separate.

What do you think of our new studio signage?

On Saturday we helped OpenRoad Scion put together a video to showcase their test drive event. What an great car! Off the factory floor, this car really makes you want to drive it. With the heritage of the AE86 behind it, it’s no wonder. The main vehicle we featured was decorated by Blitzgear.

We hope you like the video and if you want to find out more information go to

It is interesting how the photography world has shifted over the past decade. With the advance of technology, taking a relatively good picture has become easier and easier. It has shifted the photography industry heavily with many new faces entering the marketplace. Now I’m all for people chasing their dreams and everyone wanting to aspire to taking great photographs, but I feel that the industry has come to a very interesting cross road. When I first started, I remember about 40-50 photographers listed in the local directory, today that number is an astounding 600-700 listed photographers.

I believe that my profession is still a special one and still requires many skills and dedication to hone and explore the craft. I feel that the general public has reduced the importance of a great photographer for their wedding or event because technology has allowed for generally acceptable shots dictate the market perceived value of what we do as photographers. Many people have entered and exited this industry over the last 2-3 years. Some of the people have pushed the creative part of the industry to new heights of which I applaud, but many have diluted the value of what we do by charging prices that are for one, not sustainable to make a living and two make what we do as professional photographers seem cheap.

A professional photographer spends countless hours perfecting their craft. As a blend of both art and science, we constantly strive to work on our communication and our techniques. We learn how to pose you to make you look good and interact with you to make you look natural while posed. We spend time mastering skills like lighting so that we can perform under the most unfavorable circumstances. As professionals we are counted upon to perform and deliver quality photographs to you our clients.

So when you go to visit a photographer, it is okay to ask them how they perform under various circumstances. It is entirely okay to ask them for samples and have them show you that they are indeed capable of giving you something more than the general person with a camera in their hands. Afterall, these are memories that will stay in your family for centuries. I firmly believe that you should take the time to be sure that the photographer you chose for your special day or event is going to be the right fit for you.

One thing I would ask you to consider the next time you contract a photographer is this… Just like you, we have families and mortgages in addition to the maintenance of our equipment as well as the other costs of doing business. So when you come to visit with us and talk to us about your wedding day, remember that we not only want to deliver the absolute best of our abilities to you, but also that we love what we do and we all want to be able to do this as our life’s work. We understand everyone wants a deal, but think of it the other way. If your boss came and told you to work at a lower rate than you currently make, how would that affect you? I believe that a large part of this misunderstanding is that there is a lack of education to the general public about how much work can be involved on the back end.

If you are a new photographer in the industry, all I ask from you is to really understand what it takes to be a working photographer. We as industry professionals ask that you look at the true cost of doing this as a profession. You must factor in time shooting as well as editing, cost of insurance (and you really should have this), maintaining your equipment as well as things like marketing and education. Simply put, working for the equivalent of $8.50 an hour because you didn’t factor in all of the time and cost of doing business is not even good enough for the minimum wage in Vancouver. If you are serious about entering this profession, it would do you a world of good to sit down with an industry professional and ask them how to calculate the cost of doing business. It will save this industry from imploding.

Lighting is a very fine art and I have a great deal of respect to those who have mastered it. I think as a professional this is really a big part of our repetoire.
